Athlone 10-mile race set for Clonown this Saturday

Clonown Community Ltd is holding the Athlone 10 Mile Run in Clonown again this Saturday, May 18, and the race will start at 11am in Clonown village.

Online registration was available until Thursday, May 16 at 8pm. Anyone interested is asked to please check the Facebook page for further information at https://www.facebook.com/Athlone10milerun

People can also register on the day in Clonown Community Centre (N37 AW96) from 9.30 to 10.30. The event is for over 18s only.

The event was previously a 10km race but it changed to the 10-mile distance in recent years, and it continues to be a popular event among local runners.

Race organisers have reminded anyone planning to take part in the race that, due to Irish Water carrying out essential infrastructural works in west Athlone, the Canal Walk Road/Clonown Road is closed. Therefore all entrants on Saturday must arrive into Clonown via the Taylorstown Road (using the R446 Old Ballinasloe-Athlone Road).

All proceeds from the event will go to the maintenance and development of Clonown Park. The committee is thankful to the 2024 sponsors: Kennedy Monksland Service Station, James Naughton Car Sales, Mike Kenny Car Sales and Walsh's Bar and Shop (Connaught Street) for their generous help this year.

Special thanks is also extended in advance to all the volunteers, ambulance crew and the local community for their support and assistance on the day.
