'Unknown territory' as flooding at Lough Funshinagh hits all-time record level

Water levels at the seriously flooded Lough Funshinagh in South Roscommon have now hit an all-time record level, surpassing the previous peak in March 2021.

Local councillor and Rahara resident Laurence Fallon said it was an extremely worrying situation for residents living close to the lake.

"We are in unknown territory now, and any further rise will increase the all-time record level.

"Nobody is certain how high it's going to go, so it's a very worrying situation."

Cllr Fallon said the record flooding level at the lake had been 69.02 metres, but this reading was exceeded on Saturday last, March 2.

Last month, the L-2005 road in Ballagh was closed indefinitely, due to the worsening flood emergency at the lake.

Several homes in the locality are only being kept dry thanks to the round-the-clock use of industrial pumps.

Residents of two homes along the L-2005 have been advised to move out by Roscommon County Council "in the interest of their own personal safety" but have chosen to stay put for now.

On Facebook, the Lough Funshinagh Flood Crisis group shared this video this morning (Tuesday) showing the current situation with the lake at Lisfelim:
