Athlone native's new TV show is 'one to watch for 2024'

A new TV detective series starring an Athlone native has been tipped in The Sunday Times as one of the shows to watch in 2024.

From the creators of the RTE hit 'Smother' comes a new mystery thriller 'Blackshore' featuring Lisa Dwan as DI Fia Lucey, an ambitious detective who is haunted by her tragic past – a past she keeps locked away and unexplored.

After a series of allegations, Fia is banished from her high-profile position to a rural backwater close to her homeplace. During her time based there, she is charged with investigating a missing person case: a woman from Blackshore who has disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

The Coosan native, who is best known for her adaptations of the work of Samuel Beckett, starts digging up secrets and lies in her local community, which in turn, leads to a loosening of Fia's own tenuous grip on the past.

While a release date has yet to be announced by RTE, the show was included in a major promo last September as part of over 30 hours of new drama produced in partnership with the independent production sector.

It is included in the Sunday Times Irish edition in the culture section profiling the artists, musicians, films, books and TV shows to watch out for in 2024.

Created by 'Smother' writer Kate O’Riordan and directed by Daithí Keane (Smother, An Klondike), the series is produced by Treasure Entertainment/BBC Studios.

It also stars many well known faces including Stanley Townsend who TV viewers will remember from 'The Clinic' many years ago and newer productions like 'The Tunnel' and 'Redwater'. Also featured is An Cailín Ciúin's Andrew Bennett, Rory Keenan and Amy De Bhrún from 'Line of Duty'.
