Relaunch of Drum parish history book

Drum Heritage Group have recently re-printed 'Drum and its Hinterland'. The book will be launched by local TD Denis Naughten on Thursday, November 30 in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone at 8pm.

'Drum and its Hinterland' was the first parish history that was published by the group. A sought after book that is out of print for some time. Originally printed in 1994, with a second edition in 2003. It was researched, compiled and edited by the late Edward Egan.

This 2023 version has 20 additional pages featuring stories and revelations from Drum writer/historian Pat Watson including a history of the IFA in Drum, memories of Summerhill school/convent and his family history research story. The committee have also included a section on past committee members who have passed on. The book is now in a hardback style printed by Temple printing, Athlone. It is an ideal Christmas gift especially for those with local or family connections to Drum or those living abroad with Drum roots.

Original stories include a history of Thomastown Park House, The War of independence in Drum, a list of priests and nuns from Drum Parish and a detailed Old cemetery headstone inscription list.

The group would like to acknowledge funding support for the publication from Roscommon County Council under the Athlone Area Municipal District Scheme.

The book is now on sale at Drum Heritage Centre. Enquires 085-2094555 or drumheritage@gmail.com
