WATCH: Meeting of Athlone and Tubberclair in county final 35 years ago

The only ever senior county final between Athlone and Tullamore, thirty-five years ago, was recalled this week as a clip of the 1988 decider circulated on social media.

Athlone secured victory on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-7, with Jim 'Jumbo' Keane scoring two-thirds of the winning side's total at Cusack Park in Mullingar.

"Jumbo Keane left his imprint" reported that week's edition of the Westmeath Independent in its account of Athlone's 19th senior championship win.

The game itself wasn't a classic, according to our paper's report.

"While the blue ribbon event on the local GAA calendar was a gruelling hour-long contest lacking in all of the attributes so desired by the watching public, the natural compulsion to monitor proceedings until the bitter end helped ensure that most of the 2,930 crowd stayed the course," the report read.

"In truth, though, Athlone always had the upper hand, and despite Tubberclair's most gallant efforts to prise victory from them, it was not to be."

Three and a half minutes of footage from the game was posted on YouTube, and the clip features several of the well-known players who featured that day, such as Keane, the late David Allen, Oliver Keating, Jude Quigley, Padraig 'Amby' Fogarty and others.
