Roscommon remains the largest town in its county

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today released figures gathered from the 2022 census on Population Distribution and Movement in Roscommon.

It has been revealed that the largest town in the county is Roscommon, with a population of 6,555 as of April 2022.

Of towns in the county with at least 500 people, Ballaghaderreen and Termonbarry were the youngest, with both having an average age of 36.8 years. The oldest town is Boyle, with an average age of 43.9 years. Nationally, the average was 38.8 years.

In April 2022, 41% of Roscommon’s usual residents (28,743 people) were born in the county. A further 40% (27,841) were born somewhere else in the Republic of Ireland. The remaining 19% were born outside the State, up from 16% in 2016. Nationally, 20% of the usually resident population was born outside of the State.

Of the people who were resident in Roscommon, 2,985 had moved in the year prior to Census 2022. Most of these (1,597 or 54%) moved elsewhere within the county. Nationally, 265,098 usual residents moved in the year to April 2022. Of these, 71% moved to a new home in the same county.

In Roscommon, 22% of households that moved owned their new home with a loan or mortgage while 24% owned it without a loan or a mortgage. Nationally, 23% of households that moved owned their new home with a loan or mortgage while 11% owned their home without a loan or mortgage.

Households that moved in Roscommon were more likely to move to a detached house (53%) than movers nationally (23%). Fewer than one in ten Roscommon movers (9%) moved to a flat or apartment, compared to 34% who did so nationally.
