Athlone Musical Society continues to rack up the awards, and enjoyed another hugely successful weekend at the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) awards in Killarney, where they won three major awards, including Best Chorus for their 2023 production of 'CHESS – The Musical.'

The Society said they were “thrilled” to have scooped the Best Overall Chorus award for the second year in a row, having received the accolade last year for their production of 'All Shook Up.'

Along with winning the Best Chorus gong, Athlone were runners-up in two other categories in the prestigious Gilbert Section of the AIMS Awards, namely in the Best Musical Director category where Ger Madden was runner-up and and also in the Best Female Singer category for Lucia Evan's magnificent portrayal of Florence.

Ger Madden also won the runner-up award for Best Musical Director last year for his musical direction of the Elvis Presley-inspired musical 'All Shook Up' while Lucia Evans is also a past AIMS award winner in the Best Comedienne category.

Lucia Evans was runner-up in the Best Female Singer category at the annual AIMS awards in Killarney over the weekend for her magnificent portrayal of Florence Vassy in Athlone Musical Society's 2023 production of 'CHESS - The Musical.'

Ger Madden was pipped for the overall award in the Best Musical Director category by Fintan Cleary and David Hayes from Wexford Light Opera Society for their production of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' while the overall award for Best Female Singer award went to Helena Brosnan, from Galway Musical Society's production of 'RENT' which was produced by Tullamore-based Paul 'Nippy' Norton and secured 3rd place in the Best Overall Show category.

The only other Midlands-based musical society to secure an AIMS award in the INEC in Killarney over the weekend was Tullamore Musical Society who won the Best Programme Award for their production of 'Michael Collins – A Musical Drama' while Mullingar's Chris Corroon won the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Lola/Simon in Kilcock Musical & Dramatic Society's production of 'Kinky Boots.'

The winner of the Overall Show in the Gilbert Section of this year's AIMS Awards was Gorey Musical Society's 'West Side Story.' while the runner-up was UCD Musical Society for 'Into the Woods.'
