Aldi reveals plans for new Moate store

Aldi is planning to open a new €6.8m store in Moate, a move which could create 30 new jobs in the town.

The German discounter submitted plans today (Wednesday) to Westmeath County Council seeking planning approval for the new outlet, spanning 1,315 square metres on the Athlone Road.

Pending planning permission, Aldi is aiming to open the store in the autumn of 2025, creating up to 30 permanent jobs, while it's estimated up to 50 jobs will be supported during the construction period.

The supermarket will be powered by 100% green electricity and will feature 245 solar panels on the roof. Four electric vehicle charging points will also be provided at the store.

Once open, the Moate store will feature its award-winning Project Fresh layout. There will be 117 car parking spaces available for customers and 13 bike parking spaces.

Commenting on the new store plans, Donald Mackay, Managing Director of Operations, ALDI Ireland said: “We are delighted to submit our plans for a store in Moate and to commit to further investment in Westmeath. At a time when everyone is dealing with rising costs, the ability to offer our customers the best value at locations most convenient to them matters more than ever.”

Aldi's other Westmeath stores are located in Athlone, Kinnegad and two in Mullingar.

The discounter used the announcement to emphasise its partnership with innovative food and drink producers in Westmeath, including Athlone Confectionary Ltd and Quality Irish Food Ltd, and is committed to growing its Irish supply base further and increasing the number of Irish products available in its stores. The retail giant said it spent €1.1 billion with its Irish suppliers in 2022 and is currently working with over 330 Irish food and drink producers.

To date, Aldi’s Westmeath stores have donated over 50,000 meals to local charities through FoodCloud, saving the charities nearly €63,500.

Each store is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with Westmeath SPCA and KS Food Appeal some of the many local charities to receive a €500 bursary in recent times.
