Concerns expressed about Kilbeggan water supply

Major breakdowns in the water supply in Kilbeggan were highlighted by the chairman of the Westmeath Environment SPC, Cllr Tom Farrell, at the May meeting.

He said schools had to close because of another breakdown a couple of weeks ago. He urged that the council try to get an update from Irish Water "because it keeps breaking down".

Cllr Johnnie Penrose stressed that it was unacceptable that schools should be forced to close at a time of the year before exams.

David Jones, director of services, said the council would follow up with Irish Water in terms of a short-term solution, but a long-term solution was required.

He said there were some works being done on replacing the mains at the racecourse in Kilbeggan and, as part of that process, a pressure reducing valve was going to be installed at Cooley Bridge.

Mr Jones told the meeting he is optimistic that it will help the issue in the short-term, until all the water mains can be replaced.
