She explained that one of the recent developments was the launch, last year, of a grant of up to €500 towards the cost of a hairpiece, wig or hair replacement for people who suffer hair loss due to illness.

This grant comes under the Department of Social Protection's Treatment Benefit Scheme and relates to cases of hair loss resulting from cancer and forms of alopecia. The €500 grant is available to those who satisfy the medical requirements and the PRSI conditions of the Treatment Benefit scheme. In addition, medical card holders can apply for a grant towards a hairpiece or wig, while private health insurance also provides cover for costs involved.

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons including cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy, stress-related hair loss, trauma-related hair loss or natural hair thinning.
