'Spectacular' overhaul of Midlands house to feature on Room to Improve

A young couple's dramatic overhaul of a old farmhouse in Tullamore will be the featured project when the new series of RTÉ's Room to Improve begins this coming Sunday (January 8).

Architect and broadcaster Dermot Bannon will be helping the Offaly-based couple, Conor and Amy, as they set out to transform a local farmhouse that had effectively been derelict for decades.

Promotional details issued by RTÉ in advance of this weekend's programme stated that Conor has Offaly roots and works for the Irish Army as a training officer, while his partner Amy is originally from Cork.

The house being renovated was where Conor’s father grew up, and was the homestead of his paternal grandmother and family for many years.

Conor and Amy set out to renovate the old farm dwelling and incorporate a contemporary extension to the side of the house - a project which was expected to cost €325,000.

"Due to the deep rooted family connection associated with the farmhouse, Conor insisted that the original traditional building keep its charming layout but be totally upgraded and that the extension compliment the old farmhouse façade," said RTÉ in advance of the show.

"Throughout the build the couple encountered a lot of stress and unforeseen problems, Covid lockdowns, and then Conor being called away to serve in Kosovo for six months during construction."

Dermot Bannon found there were some differences in the style the couple wanted for their abode, with Conor seeking a cosy home and Amy looking for something more modern and contemporary.

"Navigating through compromises between the two was no easy feat... however the project resulted in a spectacular build with two extremely satisfied clients," stated RTÉ.
