Former local councillor bereaved

The death has occurred of Kieran Hanniffy of Doon Cross, husband of former Offaly Fine Gael councillor, Connie, on Tuesday, January 3.

Ex-Bord na Móna, Derrinlough, Mr Hanniffy's death notice also mentions formerly of Hanniffy's Furniture and Blueball pub.

From Doon Cross, Ballinahown in Offaly, he is predeceased by his brother Jimmy and sister Peg Corrigan (Banagher). Kieran is sadly missed by his wife Connie, sons Ciaran and Conor, sisters Chris O’Sullivan, Athlone and Teresa Hanamy, Clara, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours, wide circle of friends and vintage car enthusiasts, according to his death notice on the rip.ie website.

Several condolences posted described Mr Hanniffy as a “true gentleman” and a friendly and welcoming presence at vintage and classic car events who was loved and respected in his local community and beyond.

The executive of Doon GAA expressed their sympathies to the Hanniffy family on their sad loss in a warm tribute on the rip.ie website.

“Lifelong supporters of Doon GAA, Kieran and Connie celebrated their golden anniversary in August of 2020. The Hanniffys homestead and the once history steeped An Dun Transport and Heritage Museum stands proudly at the centre of Doon crossroads.

“Kieran and Connie’s love of vintage memorabilia can still be seen during the summer months when the vintage and classic cars come out of hibernation. Kieran’s memory will live on long into the memory of the people of Doon,” it added.

His remains repose this evening (Wednesday, January 4) from 4pm to 7pm in Flynn’s Funeral Home, Athlone. Funeral mass at 1pm on Thursday, January 5 in St Colmcille’s Church, Ballinahown, followed by burial in Boher Cemetery. House is private.
