Man dies after being struck by falling tree

A middle-aged man has died after being struck by a falling tree near Mullingar this afternoon.

The man, who is from Westmeath and aged 54, was one member of a team felling trees in a field in the Dunboden estate in the Gaybrook area when the tragedy occurred, around 12 noon.

Ambulance crews – including an air ambulance - attended at the accident location, as did the fire brigade and An Garda Síochána.

The man was, however, unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.
