Glennon selected to represent Ireland at world walk event
Athletics Ireland have selected a team of two athletes to compete at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships to be held in Muscat, Oman on March 4 and 5.
Matthew Glennon, Mullingar, will represent Ireland in the U20 Men’s 10km Race.
The 18-year-old is coached by Michael Lane - who also coached Olympian Jimmy McDonald - and is a rising star in the Irish race-walking scene.
Matthew of Mullingar Harriers AC represented Ireland at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Tallinn last summer and had a 22nd place finish – he will be one to watch at these games.
His team-mate is Olympian Brendan Boyce of Finn Valley AC, who will represent Ireland in the Senior Men’s 35km Race.
Coached by Olympian Rob Heffernan, Boyce has had a strong opener to the 2022 season thanks to a 12th place finish in the Spanish Open 20km race in a time of 1:27:13.
Last year was impressive for the Finn Valley star; he was 10th in the Tokyo Olympic Games 50km Walk in August and ninth in the European Race-Walking Team Championships in the Czech Republic in May 2021.
