New Garda uniform launched
A new Garda uniform has been launched and local members are expected to be wearing it in the coming weeks.
The new uniform has been described as "contemporary" by the Garda Commissioner, who says it "incorporates elements such as durability, protection and functionality".
The change follows a Cultural Audit of the organisation four years ago which showed front-line Gardaí wanted a more practical operational uniform.
The new uniform will consist of a two tone soft shell jacket, two tone waterproof jacket, Garda blue polo shirt, operational trousers and practical base layers.
The uniform is being distributed to over 13,000 uniformed Gardaí over the coming weeks and a "go live" date is expected to be announced at some point in March.
Uniformed Gardaí, Sergeants and Inspectors will sport the new uniform.
It's only the third time in the organisation's 100 years that the Garda uniform has been updated.
The uniform policy was updated in recent year to allow the wearing of official headwear for religious and cultural reasons and beliefs including the Turban, Kufi, Topi, Kippah, or Hijab.
