Local marina 'delighted' as it retains its Blue Flag status

Quigley's Marina, at Killinure Point in Glasson, has been awarded the coveted 'Blue Flag' status once again.

The facility is operated by Brian and Glenda Quigley, who were "delighted" with the news which was announced earlier this week.

In order to earn a Blue Flag, beaches and marinas must meet specific criteria around water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and site management.

"We have retained this award each year since 2003, and we work hard year-round to maintain the standards required to merit the award," Brian told the Westmeath Independent.

"The Blue Flag in Ireland is awarded by the Environmental Education unit of An Taisce. We would like to thank them, and in particular Ian Diamond, for the help and guidance through the years.

"Since 1988, the number of awards has grown from 19 beaches and 2 marinas, to 83 beaches and 10 marinas nationally.

"We hope to continue to be a part of this initiative well into the future," said Brian.

Another local marina, Athlone Marina, once held Blue Flag status but lost it some years ago due to occasional and ongoing discharges of untreated sewage into the river.

The council subsequently stopped applying for Blue Flag status on behalf of Athlone Marina.

Quigley's Marina was the only facility in counties Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford or Offaly to secure Blue Flag recognition for 2021.
