Lollipops Children"s Festival in Roscommon Arts Centre is now in its third year and this year there is yet again another fantastic feast of theatre, workshops, exhibitions, cinema and mid-term art sessions for children, their schools and their families. This year"s event will from Tuesday, October 21, to Friday, October 24, and the festival has some great treats in store during school hours as each day during the week the arts centre welcomes theatre companies from Ireland and abroad. Quirky comedy for Athlone Film Club The autumn/winter season of Athlone Film Club in the Dean Crowe Theatre continues this Tuesday, October 21, with "You Kill Me". Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley) is a hit man for his Polish mob family in Buffalo, New York. He has a drinking problem, and when he messes up a critical assignment that puts the family business in peril, his uncle Roman Krzeminski (Philip Baker Hall) sends him to San Francisco to clean up his act. He is forced to accept a job at a mortuary, and to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where he confesses what job he has, and explains that he wants to get rid of his drinking problem because it affects his capability of properly killing people. He falls for Laurel Pearson (Téa Leoni), a quirky client he meets at the funeral home. Meanwhile, things aren"t going well in Buffalo where an upstart Irish gang threatens the family business, and when violence erupts, Frank is forced to return home and with an unlikely assist from Laurel, faces old rivals on new terms. Bringing world cinema and classic films to the Dean Crowe, the Film Club has been a huge success over the past few weeks. Don"t miss out. A serving of Beckett For all lovers of drama, the Passionfruit Theatre is serving up a special treat amidst this age of Samuel Beckett hype and fervour on Saturday, October 18 next. Regarded by many as the finest Beckett actor of his generation, Conor Lovett will star in the Gare St Lazare production of Beckett"s masterpiece, "First Love". Lovett has performed an astounding 18 Beckett roles in over 24 productions. Internationally renowned for their fresh and accessible versions of Beckett"s prose works, Gare St Lazare present acclaimed actor, Conor Lovett with this novella in which the narrator, expelled from the family home upon the death of his father, takes refuge on a bench by a canal. There he meets a woman who takes him home and the events that follow are hilariously terrible. A masterpiece of Beckettian perversity. US folk in Ballymahon If you"re looking for acoustic, emotive music at its very best then you"ll no doubt enjoy US singer/songwriter Christian Cuff who is on his way to Skelly"s Bar, Ballymahon, this Saturday, October 18, next. Supported by Matt Maye and The Donovan Roberts duo on the night, Christian Cuff is a songwriter who hails from Maine, USA and is often compared to Damien Rice.
