Drugs worth €250k discovered in South Roscommon area
Drugs believed to be ecstasy with a street value of over a quarter of a million euro were recovered by Gardai in South Roscommon over the weekend. The find, one of the largest in the area over the last few years, was discovered as a result of a joint ongoing operation into the supply of illegal drugs in the Midlands and West by the Roscommon, Longford and Westmeath Drug Units on Friday last. On foot of that operation, 25,000 or 8.7kg of tablets, which are understood to be ecstasy, were seized in the South Roscommon area on Friday evening. Gardai declined to give an exact location of the find or any further details at this time, confirming that no arrests have been made in relation to the incident. However, it"s understood the discovery is being seen as a significant dent in the trafficking of controlled substances by the criminal fraternity in the region. Officers believe the drugs may have been intended for sale in the West or Midlands. The tablets have now been sent to the Garda laboratory for formal analysis and results are expected over the next day or two.
