Castledaly set up clash with Maryland as Athlone bow out
The concluding games in the group stages of the Westmeath SFC took place last weekend - and the results have set up a quarter-final meeting between Maryland and Castledaly, with the winner facing champions Garrycastle in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Athlone were knocked out of the championship by virtue of a 4-12 to 1-7 defeat to Mullingar Shamrocks. Castledaly sealed their place in the quarter-finals with an emphatic 1-11 to 0-4 over a undisciplined Coralstown/Kinnegad side which finished with 13 players. Gordon Duffy, Tommy Warburton and Paul Kelly were influential figures for Castledaly, and a brilliantly-taken goal by Niall Duffy wrapped up victory. For Coralstown/Kinnegad, Ger Leech and Wayne Fox were sent off on straight red cards in the second half. Castledaly's win earned third place in the Division A table which sets up a last quarter-final clash with Maryland. The Drumraney side missed out on the chance to advance straight into the the semi-finals when they lost to St Loman's (1-10 to 0-6). A second-half goal from Ronan Moran boosted Maryland's chances, but Kelvin Reilly raised a green flag to help Loman's to victory. That victory saw St Loman's finish top of Division B and they will either neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks or Tyrrellspass in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Garrycastle needed a last-gasp point from a James Duignan free to earn a 0-12 to 1-9 draw with Bunbrosna. That result ensured the holders went straight into the semi-finals as Division A winners. In the other Division A game, Tyrrellspass defeated struggling Killucan on a 2-12 to 2-4 scoreline. Killucan will face St Malachy's in the relegation play-off. The Downs defeated Malachy's by the minimum margin (0-12 to 1-8) to secure senior status for 2013.
