Local summer camps draw large crowds

While there may be some disappointment with the weather we"ve been having since the schools finished, local children have been kept busy with a host of summer camps in various areas of the town. Last week children in Monksland took part in a host of activities in the Monksland Summer Project, while children in Glasson were brushing up on their historical knowledge of the area. The Monksland Summer Project catered fro 80 children from Monksland and surrounding districts and was organised by volunteers from the Monksland and District Residents Association, St Joseph"s FC, Roscommon Sports Partnership and Monksland and District Foróige Club, with funding assistance from The Monksland Family Support Service HSE. Organisers said this week: 'This project would not be possible without a multi-agency approach and hopefully it will be a template for the future. The community is much appreciative to all for their involvement.' The camp provided a variety of activities to encourage individuality and group participation including arts and crafts, games and sports. The camp catered for ages 7-14 years. Also included this year was a healthy eating theme whereby the participants were provided with an array of fruits daily. This year there were also a number of older teenagers involved as team leaders with both the indoor and outdoor activity. It is hoped this will continue into the future with young people having an input into the community. The organisers added: 'The Monksland and District community celebrates all its young people and encourages them to be the best that they can be. Congratulations to everyone young and not so young on a job well done.' Meanwhile, in Glasson there was a large turnout for the Travel Back in Time Interactive Local History Summer Camp at Glasson Heritage Centre. The children at this camp were given the opportunity to travel around and take photographs or video footage during interactive history workshops. They spent the week investigating the locality and recording their activities, which will be shown during Heritage Week in Glasson later this year.
