Five arts and entertainment things to do this weekend
Promises for the Passionfruit! Athlone playwright Margaret McKenna Mullan is back with her brand new comedy play, "Promises, Promises" which will take centre stage in the Passionfruit Theatre from Thursday, November 6 until Saturday, November 9 next. All those who enjoyed "The Sleeveens" and "Lets Twist Again" are in for a night of side splitting laughter when No Fixed Abode Group hit the stage with Margaret"s latest play. "Promises, Promises" is a touching and hilarious story of two widows - a mother and daughter - both striving to cope with their own complicated situations. Ryan returns to The Shack Gifted US songwriter Audrey Ryan will be appearing in the Shack this Saturday, November 9. Supported by Athlone"s The Driftwood Manor on the night, Audrey"s last appearance in the Shack was phenomenal and this appearance is sure to provide another exceptional night of music. Ryan is an indie folk singer-songwriter multi-instrumentalist and plays accordion, guitar, keyboard, banjo and foot percussion in a 'one-man-band' fashion. Her songwriting blends together early influences Joni Mitchell, Dylan, and Neil Young - with modern influences of her generation such as Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Sufjan Stephens. Admission is free on the night. Flannery"s for top trad The weekly trad session in Flannery"s brings together some of the top musicians in the town and always produces a few surprises over the course of the evening. An open session taking place every Sunday from 2pm, the Flannery"s session always welcomes new musicians and provides plenty of craic as well as great music. Jon Kenny back in Roscommon Jon Kenny has heard all the stories of doom and gloom over the last few weeks and as the Celtic Tiger seems to be packing up and vacating the country he is making a much anticipated return to Roscommon Arts Centre to shed a little light hearted fun on the situation on Friday, November 7 next for another great show. Get passionate about Irish music Among Ireland"s current top performing artists, the exceptional Cathy Davey makes her way to the Passionfruit Theatre on Sunday, November 9 next. Davey"s recent success is certainly merited and local music fans will have the chance to see why when she performs in the intimate venue this Sunday night.
