"The Last Mistress" to seduce Athlone Film Club

The ever-provocative Director Catherine Breillat tackles a 19th Century Literary classic in Athlone Film Club"s latest offering, The Last Mistress, which will take centre stage in The Dean Crowe Theatre on Tuesday, January 27 next. Based on the 1850"s novel by Barbey d"Aurevilly, The Last Mistress is a ferocious feminist revision of the myth of the femme fatale, incarnated by Spanish courtesan Vellini (Asia Argento), whose intemperate passions come between amoral fop Ryno (the androgynous Aït Aattou) and his naive bride (Mesquida). Sumptuously shot by Yorgos Arvantis, the film plays stately sobriety against torrid melodrama and excess both emotional and carnal. The latest chapter in Breillat"s fiercely intelligent disquisition on sex and society, The Last Mistress is a costume drama with no holds barred! Doors open at 8pm.
