Woman injured in serious road accident

The main Athlone/ Mullingar road (R390) has re-opened at Baskin, a short distance from Drumraney, following an earlier crash which has  been cleared.

A woman in her late 30s remains in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin following the serious accident last night.

Emergency services attended the scene along the main R390 Athlone to Mullingar road around 9.30pm on Monday night after a single vehicle crash involving a motorbike.

The driver, a woman in her late 30s, was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore before later being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. The extent of her injuries is as yet unknown, although local reports suggest she is in a critical condition.

The accident is believed to come from a very prominent Mullingar family and has links to local motorbiking circles.

The Athlone to Mullingar road was closed for several hours following the crash facilitate a technical examination of the scene. Diversions were put in place until the road closure was lifted at lunchtime on Tuesday.
