Westmeath Independent subject of local lecture
The final lecture in the Old Athlone Society"s 2008/2009 season takes place on Wednesday, May 13. The lecture will be on the subject, The History Of The Westmeath Independent and will be delivered by the paper"s editor Tadhg Carey. Tadhg, a native of Templemore, Co. Tipperary, has been living in Athlone for almost twenty years. He was educated locally in the Marist College before studying in Trinity College, Dublin. He has worked in a variety of media outlets across the midlands including terms as editor of the Longford News and deputy editor of the Tullamore Tribune and Athlone Voice. He has been Editor of the Westmeath Independent since 2007. In 2006, Tadhg spoke to the society on a particular period of Athlone football history, the years from 1921 to 1928 during which Athlone Town FC first featured in the League of Ireland. At the core of that talk was the Athlone Town victory in the Free State Senior Cup (now FAI Cup) in 1924, the one and only time the trophy came to Athlone. His book on this subject has just been published, and a small number of copies will be available for purchase. The lecture takes place at 8pm in the Prince of Wales Hotel on Wednesday, May 13.
