Goal hungry Bower girls book place in Leinster decider
Our Lady"s Bower junior team travelled to Tang GAA pitch and defeated SS Drogheda in the Leinster semi-final. The Bower made a fine start but it took them four minutes to get off the mark, when Aoife Dolan popped the ball over the bar. Two minutes later, Drogheda got a point on the board and they added a point shortly afterwards. They were on the attack again a minute later and it took a brilliant block by centre half-back Meadhbh Flynn to deny them a score. Drogheda scored another point in the 10 minute (free). The Bower replied with a point from a free by Vicki McEnery, after a foul on Aoife Dolan, and Jenny Byrne then added a point. After Ailbhe McGowan and Amy Farrell linked up, the ball was passed to Aine McCaul, who slotted the ball neatly into the top corner of the net. A foul on Jenny Byrne led to a scoring chance for Vicki McEnery, but this time she cleverly popped it into the back of the net. The next few minutes saw some lapses in the Bower defence with Drogheda scoring three points from play. However, the Athlone girls got back on track quickly, with full-forward Jenny Byrne awarded a penalty, which Vicki McEnery fired home. Only a minute later, the ball was in the net again, Amy Farrell the scorer this time. McEnery added to her personal tally four minutes later, with a point from a 40-yard free. The Bower led at half-time by 4-4 to 0-6. Soon after the restart, a lovely pass by Jenny Byrne to Vicki McEnery resulted in a point for the latter. Mary C. Walsh then set up Byrne for a well-taken goal. However, two minutes later Drogheda scored their only goal of the game. The Bower responded with two rapid fire goals from Amy Farrell and Jenny Byrne. Mary C. Walsh soon added her name to the scoresheet with a point. After a top class save from Bower "keeper Laura Dowling, Vicki McEnery was in the right place at the other end to slot in another goal. The final score of the game came from a lovely passage of play, with McEnery and McGowan combining and Aoife Dolan finishing off in style with a great point. Our Lady"s Bower now face St Mary"s Naas in the Leinster final which promises to be an intriguing match. This will be on the 4th or 5th of March, and all support is welcome.
