Seven detained following moate firearms seizure

Five men and two women are still being detained for garda questioning today after firearms and weapons were seized in Moate over the weekend.

Planned searches were conducted at a number of addresses in Moate on Sunday morning, and as a result of that a number of firearms and other weapons were seized.

It’s understood a large contingent of Gardai were involved in the operation including the Armed Support Unit.
Seven people were arrested at the scene, five men and two women, ranging in age from 27 to 65.

They are currently being detained for questioning in Athlone and Tullamore Garda Stations under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, where they can be held for up 72 hours.
