Bar Metro beat The Prince in battle of the bars

The battle of the bars took place recently in the Athlone Town stadium in Lissywoollen, with two local licensed premises going head to head in a bid to raise money for Athlone Town FC. In what was a very one sided first half, Bar Metro were 5-0 up at half-time, with goals from Eric Purtill, a Sean Kelly own goal, Decky Fallon, Ronan Larkin and Shane Henry. The second half was a lot more of a contest with tackles flying in and the game proving far from a friendly match at times. Another goal from Ronan Larkin, which he scored with a wonderful 20-yard strike, and one from Damien Hudson finished the game off, but not without The Prince putting up a fight, with Bar Metro goalkeeper Ray Griffin pulling off three or four brilliant saves. Gerard Fallon of The Prince also missed a penalty, which was awarded when Eoin O"Flaherty took down Damien McManus in the box. There was an after-match party in Bar Metro where there was a raffle with money raised going to Athlone Town FC as well. Organisers Howie Grehan, Eoin O"Flaherty and Mark Beaumont thanked everybody who showed up to support the night. 'We would also like to thank The Prince for getting the team together and Gerry McHugh and Rory Fitzmaurice for providing the jerseys, Bernie Larkin and the lads from the iSTAT supporters trust for all their help, and everybody that donated prizes, too,' said the organisers.
