Carmelite Notes Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira On the 21st February 2009 Pope Benedict XVI announced the canonisation of Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira - till now blessed Nuno of Saint Mary - which took place on Sunday April 26th along with the canonisation of four other illustrious Church figures. For Portugal and the Portuguese people this fact is a cause for rejoicing and hope. It should also be an occasion for reflection about the qualities and heroic virtues of this important historical personality, which are worthy of imitation at the present time. Nuno Alvares Pereira lived in a difficult period of dynastic crisis, with strong social and political divisions in Portugal that threatened the nation"s identity and independence. Lord God, You called Blessed Nuno Alvares Fereira to put aside his sword and follow Christ under the Patronage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Through his prayers may we too deny ourselves, and devote ourselves to you with all our hearts. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Recently Deceased: Eileen Farrell, Boyanna, Moate; Rose (Dolly) Duffy, Farnamanny, Athlone; Doreen Reilly, Cartron Grange, Moate. We extend our sincere sympathy to their families and loved ones.
