Diversions in place in glasson following accident
Diversions are expected to be in place in Glasson village for the next hour or so after a pedestrian was knocked down in an early morning accident.
Gardai are currently examining the scene of the crash which happened in the centre of the village, between Spollen’s supermarket and filling station and the Glasson Village Restaurant, around 8am this morning. A woman in her 20s was knocked down as she was crossing the road.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident and the victim was brought to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore with serious head injuries. Early reports indicate that the woman is in a critical condition.
The driver of the car escaped injury, although was said to be in a state of shock following the collision.
With diversions currently in place, gardai are advising motorists along the N55 to allow extra time for their journey while the road is being examined. Those travelling from Athlone should take the Mullingar Road to Corr Cross, and then turn left towards Glasson, while anyone coming from the Ballymahon direction is urged to turn left on to the Brittas Road in Glasson to get into Athlone.
Glasson Gardai are looking for witnesses to the accident to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call 090 648 5102 or Athlone Garda Station at 090 6492609.
