Should there be a designated bathing area on the Shannon in Athlone?
A local councillor is to call on the Westmeath County Council to look into designating a specific area in Athlone for bathing in the River Shannon.
Cllr Michael O'Brien is due to raise the issue at Monday's meeting of the Athlone Municipal District.
Westmeath currently has three designatied bathing areas, all in North or East Westmeath. They are Portnashangan (Lough Owel); The Cut (Lough Lene) and Lilliput (Lough Ennell).
The independent councillor's motion for Monday's meeting reads: “That Athlone Municipal District discuss the possibility of a designated bathing area in the river Shannon.”
