No serious injuries as jeep overturns on motorway
A collision on the motorway outside Athlone yesterday (Tuesday) led to legthy traffic tailbacks, but thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.
Sergeant Andrew Haran of Athlone Garda Station said a jeep and trailer had overturned on the motorway, leading to a collision with another vehicle.
"It was very windy at that time so we are considering whether or not the wind may have been a factor in the accident," he said.
The incident happened on a westbound section of the motorway by exit 10 (Ballymahon Road).
Sergeant Haran said a male was taken to hospital for a checkup, but his injuries are not thought to have been serious.
There was "a lot of debris" on the motorway, and significant traffic delays in the aftermath of the accident.
Gardai are also investigating an attempted burglary at the Carphone Warehouse store in the Creggan area of Athlone in the early hours of last Thursday morning.
Sergeant Haran said criminal damage was caused to the premises during the attempted break-in. Gardai arrived at approximately 4.45am and a dark-coloured BMW was spotted leaving the scene.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 64 92 600.
