Something for everyone at Moate Show
One of the oldest agricultural shows in the country takes place this Sunday, August 25, in the South Westmeath town of Moate, which will stage its 178th Agricultural Show in The Showgrounds on the Dublin road.
One of the most eagerly-awaited events on the local farming calendar, Moate Agricultural Show promises to have something to suit every member of the family, and the organising committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes on the final preparations for the past number of months.
This year's show in Moate will be tinged with sadness due to the recent passing of one of the stalwarts of the annual event, Larry Dunican. Larry, who was President of the organising committee, passed away suddenly the morning after this year's show launch in the Grand Hotel in Moate last month, and his immense contribution to every aspect of the show will be sorely missed this year.
However, the hardworking committee has left no stone unturned to ensure that Sunday's show will be one of the biggest and best to date. There are 68 horse and pony classes; 26 classes in the poultry section; six breeds of pedigree cattle on show in the cattle section; a much expanded horticulture section and the cookery section will feature the Great Centra Bake Off, which is sponsored by McCarthy's Centra in Moate with a first prize of €100 for the contestant who bakes the best Victoria Sponge, apple tart and six scones.
A new section in Moate Show this year is the honey section, which has been included as a result of the huge interest in biodiversity and beekeeping. The Westmeath Beekeepers Association is organising this section of the show.
There are 17 classes in the craft and needlework section which will feature everything from the best tea cosy to the most tastefully gift wrapped box, and a special class for the best recycled item, which carries a prize fund of €100.
Children will have a great day out in Moate on Sunday, with 52 classes specially reserved for them, including a Lego building competition, with a prize of €50, and a recycling competition, also with a €50 prize.
The Dog Show is also very popular with adults and children alike, and there are 17 classes for dogs. There will also be showjumping throughout the day and musical entertainment to suit all ages.
The 178th Moate Show – which started in 1839 – will continue on Sunday until 7pm with admission for adults just €10 and free admission for children
A great day out is assured for all.
