Streamstown sisters hope to make camogie history with Westmeath

The McCormack sisters from Streamstown, Mairéad and Joanne, are hoping to help Westmeath's camogie team make history this Sunday.

Westmeath face Galway in the All-Ireland intermediate championship final at Croke Park on Sunday (throw-in 2pm) and the Westmeath team is captained by Mairéad McCormack.

Mairéad's sister Joanne (pictured below with young fans at last week's 'meet and greet' event in TEG Cusack Park) is also part of the Westmeath panel. Joanne lives in Rosemount and is married to current Rosemount GAA club chairman Peter Keenan. Both Mairead and Joanne play their club camogie for Castletown-Geoghegan, and they have both played football for Kilbeggan.

Another member of the McCormack clan, Edel has also represented Westmeath with distinction in camogie. And when Westmeath defeated Dublin in the 2017 All-Ireland premier junior championship final, the three McCormack sisters were all part of the starting line-up in what was a landmark success for the Lake County.

In Sunday's eagerly awaited camogie final, Westmeath are bidding to win the All-Ireland intermediate title which would earn a coveted place in the senior ranks.

When the sides met in the group stages, Galway claimed a narrow win (3-9 to 1-14) and Westmeath will be hoping to overturn that result on Sunday with the Jack McGrath Cup up for grabs.

Johnny Greville's Westmeath charges edged out Down by a single point in their semi-final (2-11 to 1-13), while Galway had four points to spare against Tipperary (2-9 to 2-5) in the other semi-final.

Galway are also in the senior decider in which they meet Kilkenny at 4.15pm, with Cathal Murray in charge of both Galway teams.

The first game in the triple header of finals on the day is the All-Ireland premier junior decider between Kerry and Limerick (12.00). All three finals will be televised live on RTE 2.

Tickets for Sunday's finals can be purchased at selected Centra and SuperValu outlets nationwide and tickets will be available to buy outside the stadium on match-day.
