LATEST: Storm Ali causes huge disruption in Midlands

Storm Ali has caused significant disruption throughout the Midlands today (Wednesday). 

The storm forced the cancellation of day two of the National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore, and resulted in the temporary closure of one of the main roads in Athlone, where a tree fell on top of a car. 

The tree fell on a Mercedes on the N55 Ballymahon Road in Athlone, near the entrance to The Moorings estate. This resulted in a man sustaining what were described by Gardai as minor injuries. 

Here's the latest on the storm and its impact on the Midlands:

* The Ballymahon Road was closed between the White Gates and Athlone GAA club as council crews worked to remove the fallen tree. Shortly before 5pm, a council official told the Westmeath Independent that the road was in the process of being reopened.  

* A 'status yellow' wind warning is in effect throughout Ireland until 5pm. 

* A number of fallen trees were reported in areas of South Roscommon, including Athleague, Four Roads and Clonark. 

* There are a number of power outages locally, including in the Drum and Kiltoom areas, where more than 130 homes are currently without electricity. A fault in the Rosemount area of Westmeath has cut off power supply to 44 homes.

* There were major delays to train services to and from Athlone after fallen trees forced a closure this morning of the railway line between Clara and Tullamore. The line reopened some time ago but services are still experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes. Irish Rail tweeted the following photo showing some of the damage that was caused this morning:
