Safety fears over 'deadly dangerous' Coosan road

The road to the popular Coosan Point amenity was described as "deadly dangerous" at a council meeting last week.

The June meeting of the Athlone Municipal District heard Cllr Ailish McManus call for a "safety review" of the Coosan Point Road to be carried out as soon as possible.

The council executive noted that the speed limit on the road was 50km per hour to Coosan cemetery, and 60km per hour thereafter, but Cllr McManus said these limits were regularly exceeded.

"Cars are travelling at astronomical speeds from the graveyard on down. It's just crazy," said Cllr McManus.

"There are children on the road, people out walking, and it's just deadly dangerous."

Cllr Paul Hogan agreed that there was "an awful lot of speeding" happening on the road.

"It's an accident blackspot. As a matter of urgency, could something be rolled out to address the speeding going on on that road?" he asked.

Cllr John Dolan said that "at the very least" a speed survey should be carried out on the road.

"(If the survey was done) we could then make an informed decision on it and find out whether there is a problem, though I think we all know there's a problem," he said.

District Engineer Pat Nally said the local authority would carry out a speed survey of the road as a first step.

A written response from the local authority said any "large scale remedial measures" on the road would have to be considered by members when they are allocating funds from the budget for 2019.
