Pupils collaborate with Athlone artist to create new Summerhill NS artwork
Summerhill National School in Athlone has unveiled a unique and vibrant piece of artwork created by its fifth and sixth class pupils in partnership with their teacher, Daniel McManus, and local artist Jane Walsh.
The project saw the children gather small, meaningful objects from their everyday lives - items that held memories, friendships, and moments from their school journey.
From tiny toys to bits of nature, these found treasures were then transformed by Jane Walsh into a powerful piece of art that now proudly hangs in the school.
The artwork, which went on display on Tuesday last, April 8, is built around the school crest and brought to life through layers of colourful objects and resin.
At its heart lies an open book, created from dozens of handwritten messages from the students, sharing what school means to them and their hopes for the future.
“The students poured their hearts into this,” commented Jane. “Each object tells a story, and together they capture the energy, imagination, and joyful spirit of the school. It’s a living memory of their time here.”
The finished piece is more than just a visual celebration—it’s a symbol of connection, creativity, and community, designed to inspire generations of students to come.
The project was part of the 2025 Teacher Artist Partnership + (TAP+) programme. It was funded by the Department of Education’s Arts in Education initiative under the Creative Ireland, Creative Youth Plan in collaboration with Athlone Education Support Centre.
The national initiative brings teachers, professional artists and pupils together to create meaningful experiences through the arts.
Jane Walsh, from Coosan, is the artist behind the colourful, Athlone-based, Button Studio craft business.
