TUS wins prestigious international award for student support innovation

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Faculty of Continuing, Professional, Online and Distance Learning has been awarded 'Best Student Support Service Initiative' honour at the 2025 Keystone Group Awards for its pioneering Learning Gates initiative.

Selected from a competitive pool of international submissions, the award recognises the university’s innovative approach to widening access to higher education in rural Ireland.

The Learning Gates model blends the flexibility of online learning with local, in-person support through the Connected Hubs Network—creating a bridge between digital access and community-based learning.

In their statement, the judging panel noted: "Technological University of the Shannon’s Learning Gates impressed judges with its innovative approach to expanding higher education access in rural Ireland.

"They used the Connected Hubs Network to enhance learning opportunities for non-traditional and adult students. This approach removed geographical barriers by providing online education and in-person support, helping to create stronger communities."

Dr Michael Tobin, Dean of the Faculty, commented: "This award is a testament to the vision and commitment of our team in delivering higher education in new and inclusive ways. The Learning Gates initiative reflects our belief that location should never be a barrier to learning.

"By combining the flexibility of online education with a physical presence in local hubs, we’ve created a model that supports adult and non-traditional learners where they live and work. It’s a ground-breaking approach that not only increases access, but also helps build stronger community connections around lifelong learning."

The award comes as the Faculty prepares to attend the upcoming Irish Education Awards 2025, where it has been shortlisted in three national categories: Career Impact Strategy Award; Best Online Learning Experience; and Best Community Academic Collaboration (in partnership with the Connected Hubs Network).

TUS said this recognition further reinforces the impact of its commitment to flexible, inclusive and community-centred higher education.
