Famed Claret Jug visits Athlone Golf Club
Athlone Golf Club was honoured to be chosen as one of 20 clubs across Ireland to host the prestigious Claret Jug, one of the most iconic trophies in golf.
Before its journey to Royal Portrush later this year - where Clara native Shane Lowry claimed victory in 2019 - it made a memorable stop in Athlone last week.
Athlone Golf Club President Nora St John, along with Captains Derek Kenna and Anne O’Sullivan, warmly welcomed golf enthusiasts and club members of all ages, eager to capture a photo with this revered symbol of The Open Championship.
Michael Evans, President of Golf Ireland and proud Athlone Golf Club member, also joined the celebrations following his recent election at the Golf Ireland AGM.
With its idyllic location on the shores of Lough Ree and a beautiful spring evening as the backdrop, it could be said that the event marked the official kickoff to an exciting golfing season ahead.
The club is looking forward to a bustling year filled with events for golfers of all levels and ages, including Get into Golf programmes for women and men, junior coaching, open competitions and social gatherings.
Athlone Golf Club will host the All-Ireland finals for the Men's Pierce Purcell and Women's Intermediate Foursomes in August and September, as well as the Connacht finals of the Jack O’Sullivan Trophy, named in honour of Anne O'Sullivan’s late father.
