Athlone Regional Sports Centre to host Irish Heart Foundation fundraising event

Athlone Regional Sports Centre will host a fundraising fun, run or walk in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation on Sunday, April 27, 11am.

The event has been organised by local stroke survivor Carrie Minagh and Cllr John Dolan, who are aiming to raise funds in support of those living with stroke and heart conditions across Ireland on behalf of the Irish Heart Foundation.

"Carrie approached me late last year and asked if we could organise an event to create public awareness relating to the signs and symptoms of stroke and cardiac arrest. As a stroke survivor, Carrie has always endeavoured to create awareness about spotting signs of a stroke and what to do in such a scenario.

"In my case, I was very fortunate also to survive a cardiac arrest and I have also tried to create awareness about how to perform CPR and maybe save a life.

"We have organised this event in the hope that as many as possible can attend on the day, either walk or run the the 2.5km, 5km or 10km distances and make a donation to the Irish Heart Foundation on the day.

"We were lucky enough to have MEP Nina Carberry launch the event last week and she was delighted to oblige," Cllr Dolan said.
