'Player related issues' cited as Curran leaves Carlow role

Former St Brigid's and Roscommon custodian Shane Curran has departed his role as Carlow senior football manager.

Curran informed the Carlow county board that he had opted to leave the role due to "player related issues which he believed were beyond the scope of the management team".

A statement from the Carlow County Board read: "Shane Curran has informed Carlow GAA that he and his backroom team are stepping away from the management of the Carlow senior football team with immediate effect.

"This decision was based on player-related issues which he believed were beyond the scope of the management team.

"Carlow GAA are in the process of looking for an interim senior football manager for the championship season."

Confirmation of Curran's departure comes in advance of Carlow's Leinster senior football championship first round fixture against Meath on Sunday week, April 6.

Curran was appointed to his first senior inter-county managerial role in August 2024 and endured a mixed Allianz Football League Division 4 campaign, Carlow winning three, losing three and drawing one of their seven round robin fixtures.

Prior to his appointment as Carlow manager, Curran was part of the St Malachy's management team who contested the Westmeath senior football championship last year, the Castletown-Geoghegan based club maintaining their status for the 2025 campaign.

Curran previously managed the Caulry footballers and they reached the Westmeath senior championship semi-finals during his time in charge.
