Athlone based Mersus Technologies hosts 'Junior Mayor' initiative visit
Town Mayor, Cllr Frankie Keena, has complimented the synergy between youth and Athlone based Mersus Technologies during a recent 'Junior Mayor' initiative visit to the company.
Mersus Technology is a leading player in the immersive technology space from its location at Inish Carraig Business Centre in Golden Island.
As part of the Town Mayor's 'Junior Mayor' initiative, a number of students from local schools visited the company during which they availed of the opportunity to use the company's Avatar Academy XR training platform.
"The student's knowledge of XR technology was impressive, with half a dozen of them even owning VR headsets," Geoff Allen, Mersus CEO, said.
Mayor Keena explained that Mersus had previously participated in the 'Junior Mayor' initiative to support local schools across the Midlands region.
"Civic duty and trying to improve our region is what we are all about. The future of our town and the region will be reflected by its ability to produce young women and men gainfully employed in future-facing jobs. I have followed the progress of Mersus over the years and their commitment to developing local talent from all across the Midlands.
"In this office, there is a certain creative energy that will have a huge value in the future for our region. Winning the European Technology award is no surprise when you see their software at work.
"I would like to sincerely thank Mersus Technology for welcoming these students into their offices. It was fantastic to witness the positive engagement between the students and Mersus. The purpose of the visit is to to introduce the students to the business world of ICT and where possible future employment opportunities can be identified," Cllr Keena said.
CTO and Mersus co-founder Dermot Condron noted that there were currently 30 placement students working to enhance their studies in the company's placement programme.
"I’m surprised at how many stay on to keep learning after their prescribed time has ended. It is addictive around here, as many students have come and never left," Mr Condron said.
During the presentation, Mersus extended the invitation for the students with headsets to download the Avatar Academy app directly from the META App Store. Just last month, Mersus successfully navigated a rigorous process to secure the app's acceptance on the Meta App Store. For Mersus, it is the culmination of years of development to achieve what is a huge milestone.
“Meta is the biggest name in XR, and by being on their store, our Avatar Academy app is one click away from 24 million users. Given the high technical standards to deploy an app on the store, it was a huge validation of our team’s efforts when the official notification arrived. We have spent several years developing the platform into a world-class piece of software that can now compete with any on the global stage.
“It is not difficult to channel the enthusiasm we see from the students here today into the talent of tomorrow," company CEO Mr Allen concluded.
