Oak planting at Athlone sports centre for National Tree Week

National Tree Week is currently underway, and Westmeath County Council celebrated it by planting a native oak tree at Athlone Regional Sports Centre on Monday.

Trees were kindly donated by Free Trees Ireland in an effort to boost biodiversity and environmental sustainability in the county.

“This initiative highlights the vital role of trees in supporting wildlife, improving air quality, and tackling climate change,” said Christina Sweeney, Biodiversity Officer at Westmeath County Council.

Westmeath County Council extended its gratitude to Paddy Mangan of Free Trees Ireland for their generous contribution and encouraged local residents to get involved in tree-planting efforts to enhance the county’s natural landscape.

National Tree Week, which takes place from March 9 to March 16, encourages communities to plant and protect native trees, ensuring a greener and healthier future.
