Local schools among winners at First Lego League Challenge Regional Finals

Two local school took home awards at the Lego League Challenge Regional Finals which took place last week.

The event took place on Wednesday, March 5, and Thursday March 6 in the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Athlone.

Using Lego blocks and their problem-solving abilities, 34 teams from ten counties took part in the competition.

Both Coláiste Chiarán in Athlone and Mercy Secondary School in Ballymahon took home awards.

The award for Robot Design went to the Coláiste Chiarán team for their project, Double Decker Couch Potatoes.

Mercy Secondary School in Ballymahon took home two awards including the Core Values award for their Block Busters entry, and the Rising All-Star award for their Weird Fishes entry.

Team MCD from Mercy Secondary School in Kilbeggan claimed the Innovation Project award.

Four teams are now going through to the national finals which take place on Saturday, April 12, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dublin Airport.

They are Fishco Mobile from Scoil an Chlochair, Kilbeggan, the champions from the March 5 event, as well as Mounthawk Masterminds from Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, County Kerry, winners of the March 6 event.

Through to the national final also are the two runners-up: Nemo’s Crusaders from Tullamore College and Team MCD from Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan.
