Motorist detected excessively speeding in Athlone on National Slow Down Day
Gardai have confirmed that a motorist was detected to be driving at a speed of 142km/h on the M6 in Athlone on National Slow Down Day.
A speed limit of 120km/h exists on the motorway, the driver being one of 484 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limits up until 5pm on Wednesday, figures have revealed.
Gardai conducted the 24 hour national speed enforcement operation supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders.
The aim of National Slow Down Day is to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding, encourage a national conversation on the impact of speeding, to increase overall compliance with speed limits in place nationwide and to deter and detect those that are intent on driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
During 2024, An Garda Síochána, with the support of Roads Safety Partners GoSafe, issued over 145,000+ Fixed Charge Notices to drivers driving in excess of the speed limit, nearly 400 detections daily (Garda and GoSafe detections).
