Duffy to fill late John Naughten's seat on Roscommon County Council

Valerie Duffy has been elected to fill the late Cllr John Naughten's seat on Roscommon County Council.

The Moore community activist was the chosen candidate of Fine Gael members who voted at the co-option selection convention in the Athlone Springs Hotel on Thursday night.

Duffy defeated Taughmaconnell nominee Ger Grehan following the counting of members' votes.

The seat in the Athlone Local Electoral Area had remained vacant since Cllr John Naughten's death in October of last year.

Speaking prior to the convention Duffy acknowledged the difference the late Cllr John Naughten's work had made to the local community.

"Cllr Naughten made a real difference in our local communities and I would like the opportunity to continue this good work representing the views and issues that matter at county council level," Ms Duffy said.
