Buccaneers take part in national mixed touch rugby championship

Buccaneers Touch took part in the annual Liam Carroll Cup on Saturday last at the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin. This competition is the National Mixed Touch Rugby championship.

Buccs travelled with a youthful squad as well as some experienced heads. They were in Division 1 alongside favourites Old Wesley as well as Belfast's Cooke Warriors, Galway's Racoon West and DSC Wanderers from Dublin.

In the first of the five games of the day, Buccs took on eventual winners Old Wesley Wyverns. The Donnybrook side fielded an all-international lineup but Buccaneers put up a strong performance before going down 5-1 with Finn Copelin scoring for Buccs.

The second game was against Old Wesley Dragons and despite tries from Fionn Joyce and Paul Gavin, Buccs went down to a 5-2 defeat.

Buccs took on local rivals Racoon West next but lost 4-1 with Feidhlim Byrne getting Buccs' only score. Game 4 was against Cooke Warriors and Fionn Joyce beat several defenders to score for Buccs but Cooke recovered to win 4-1.

Buccs' last game of the day was against DSC Wanderers. The Athlone side got off to a good start with a try from Paul Gavin and could have had a few more, but DSC again came back to win 4-1.

Best for Buccs on the day were Fionn Joyce, Feidhlim Byrne and Maryam Adetayo. Well done to Feidhlim Byrne also refereed two games as well as playing all five games for Buccs.
