Two local schools progress in Credit Union Schools Quiz contest

Pupils from two local schools have progressed to the next stage of the prestigious Credit Union Schools Quiz competition having emerged as category winners at the knockout stages over the weekend.

Category A winners came from Ballybay National School in Kiltoom, South Roscommon while the Category B winners represented Cornamaddy National School in Athlone, with both schools now proceeding to the regional finals.

Hosted by Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union, the annual schools quiz is the largest competition of its type in Ireland and attracts more than 25,000 participants from all over the country each year, and is the largest competition of its type. The knockout stages took place on Sunday last, February 9, on the TUS Athlone campus, with over 200 students from the Athlone and Castlerea area taking part.

Run over three stages between the months of February to April, the competition culminates in a national final in the RDS Dublin on Sunday, April 6 next.

Marise O’Toole, Deputy CEO of Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union described the Credit Union Schools Quiz as more than a chance to win prizes – it is an unforgettable journey of teamwork and lasting memories”. She added that the students participating in this year’s competition “represented their schools with pride” and she congratulated the two winning teams from Ballybay and Cornamaddy national schools, who will go on now to represent their schools at the regional level.

Questions in the knockout stages of the Credit Union Schools Quiz covered a wide range of topics including geography, history, music, literature and sport with the winning teams really rising to the tough challenge. to the challenge.
