Banagher's new €790k outdoor swimming pool 'to open this summer'
A local fundraising drive has been announced as part of efforts to get a much-anticipated upgrade of Banagher's outdoor swimming pool in place by this summer.
The upgrade of the pool was launched at a well-attended event in the Crank House, Banagher, on Sunday evening.
The Shannon Bank Park Development Group unveiled details of a significant fundraising drive for the project, which follows the allocation of €616,000 in grant aid towards it from the Fáilte Ireland Just Transition Fund.
The revamped pool on the banks of the Shannon was one of the developments outlined in a masterplan for Banagher Marina and its environs which was launched last year.
The plan is for the new pool to open for the local community and visitors to Banagher this summer.
It's described as "a state-of-the-art outdoor swimming facility," that will include "wheelchair access, enhanced seating, wider pontoons, and a kayak/paddleboard launch".
The Shannon Bank Park Development Group stated that the overall budget for the pool is approximately €788,000, and 84% of this has been secured through grant aid and fundraising to date, leaving approximately €125,000 still to be raised locally.
A number of local organisations are set to be involved in upcoming fundraising events to help reach the €125,000 target.
These include an auction night in April; a major fundraising swim on the River Shannon on June 28; and a Carrauntoohil Challenge which it's hoped will see more than 100 locals will climb Ireland's tallest mountain in support of the campaign.
In addition, Offaly Search & Rescue is planning to host a farmers/craft market in Shannon Bank Park on June 21.
And supporters will be invited to purchase personalised nameplates that will be displayed at the new pool, with corporate sponsorship opportunities also set to be made available.
An iDonate online fundraising page has also been launched as part of the project, at: www.idonate.ie/cause/Banagherpool.
Additional events being planned include a tractor run, horse and pony trek, charity cycle and events in local pubs as well as fundraisers being organised by local schools.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a lasting legacy for Banagher," said John Butler, spokesperson for the Shannon Bank Park Development Group.
"We're overwhelmed by the initial support and are calling on the community to join us in making this project a reality. Every contribution brings us closer to a new pool that will benefit generations to come."
The development group said the upgraded outdoor swimming pool will provide a "a safe and enjoyable environment for swimmers of all ages," and will promote physical health and mental well-being by "offering a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone."
There has been a swimming pool at this location in Banagher since the 1950s, and it's hoped that the upgrade of the amenity will enhance the recreational and tourism appeal of the West Offaly and East Galway areas.
