Athlone poet to launch new collection

By Rebekah O'Reilly

Athlone native Bridie Breen is returning to her hometown to launch her new poetry collection titled 'The Brigid in Me'.

The book launch is taking place at 2pm on Saturday, February 8, in Abbey Road Art Studios in conjunction with Athlone Family Resource Centre.

"After 43 years of emigration, I am holding this happy event in my hearted home. Sure if anyone remembers me, they are very welcome for a cuppa and chat," Bridie said.

Themes of childhood, journeying, and reawakening are explored by Bridie throughout the poems.

"Brigid as Celtic goddess and Saint is my inspiration in this publication. The friendship of many talented creative women in Athlone draws me back home on a regular basis for art, music, and sisterhood," Bridie said.

"My childhood was spent living in St Mel's Terrace, which no longer exists. The neighbours and time spent there have never been forgotten. One of my poems is inspired by yearly pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, a neighbour climbed it in his bare feet. I hold awe for people who still do it.

"Also reflected in my poems is the sacred space found on the Hill of Uisneach near Mullingar. The energy of the land and the rich mythology is unique."

Bridie extends her thanks to AFRC Manager Delores Crerar, and Dr Caroline Coyle, who have supported her in hosting the launch.
