Fire Service and gardai called to scene of Athlone car fire

Athlone Fire Service and local gardai attended the scene of a car fire in Athlone this morning (Wednesday), when a car driving in the direction of Southern Station Road caught fire.

The fire service was notified of the fire at 8.40am and spent over an hour at the scene to bring the fire under control.

A spokesperson for Athlone Gardai said the female driver of the car noticed smoke coming from the vehicle as she was travelling in the direction of Southern Station road, so she took evasive action by quickly exiting the car after which it caught fire. No injuries were reported.

This is the second car fire to take place in the Athlone area over the past number of days, after a car which was travelling along the M6 motorway in the direction of Ballinasloe caught fire on Sunday evening after the male driver noticed smoke coming from the vehicle.

Athlone Fire Service also attended at that incident, but no injuries were reported.
